It is important you have an understanding of how visual features of texts are used to convey meaning as you will invariably be asked to analyse an image in Paper One and you may choose to use a visual text as related material. You should ensure you are familiar with range of visual techniques so you are armed to analyse an unseen text.

Steps in analysing a visual text:

1.       You must always identify a visual technique that has been used. Be explicit and name the technique. If an image includes written text, do not make the mistake of only referring to the words. You may however link the written features with a visual technique.

2.       You should how the technique has been used with specific examples from the text.

3.       Explain the meaning conveyed through this example. It is not enough to simply discuss techniques used. You must explain how it represents the concept identified in the question (e.g. belonging, relationships, alienation, transition etc).

4.       Discuss the effectiveness of the visual technique in communicating an idea about the concept. You may consider why the composer chose to do this.
